Choosing a Business Name:

Brought to you by Concept House Marketing

So you want to start a business or you already have but it’s missing something, well good for you, it’s a tough task…and it gets ever harder. You need a name, but not just any name; you need ‘THE’ name. A well thought out business name can really take your business or business idea to the next level. Sure you could go and pay some company thousands of dollars or use some name generator on the internet…but why spend the money or randomness when you can just do it yourself? Well we here at Concept House are here to help. Below you’ll find some tips and tricks on how to come up with the perfect name for your business!

1.) A Name, Name

One of the oldest tricks in the book is simply naming your business after yourself. Naming the company off your founders last names is an old school trick and works best for a more professional setting such as attorney’s or private practices. However if you want it to be more personable, use your families names too. Trade based businesses have been using combinations of father/son/kids for ages.

2.) Hidden Meanings

Hidden meanings…or not so hidden meanings, can work wonders. Foreign words or phrases can become a cool and hip name while still correlating to what your business does. Concept House for example was a way for us to fit multiple meanings into our name! ‘Concept’ since were a branding and design company, and ‘House’ from the German Bauhaus art movement relating back to a company that is full of artists. Together they form a modern and descriptive name for our company.

3.) Keeping it Short and Simple

Another way is to keep the name short. You can do this in a variety of ways; acronyms, abbreviation, or even inventing an alternative spelling of a word of phrase to shorten it.

These are just some ways you can come up with an awesome name for your business. When deciding on a company name, you want to make sure you take the correct steps in implementing said name. You don’t want to box yourself in or having something totally out there that makes no sense for your company. Make sure no one else is using the name you want to use, you can check google and other internet searches. If your internet search comes back clean you can then move on to checking trademarks and copyrights as well as a Secretary of State search to see if that name has already been registered to an LLC.

An important step in choosing your name is also to get feedback. When we here at Concept House were deciding on our name, we had put together a list of names that checked off every box. We liked them, they weren’t being used already, and they worked for our business model. Then we put together a list of people who we could trust to give us honest feedback on our name selections. Finally, we received feedback on the names and then were able to narrow it down to what we have now.

Choosing a name isn’t an overnight process. You need to take the time and really sit on them and let them marinate in your brain. Choosing too quickly could have negative effects if a month from them you decide you no longer like it or don’t get feedback and realize there’s something wrong with it. Once you have a name you want to make sure you can also get domain and social media usernames that work. We had chosen Concept House as our name and were able to snag ‘’ as our domain and utilized ‘ConceptHouseM’ (marketing) for our social media usernames. You want to be able to keep all of these the same or at least similar so that you’re easy to find. Hopefully after reading this you have at least a little better vision on how you need to approach your business name search!
